John Hiter
John David Hiter, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, served his country for three years with the discipline and commitment that would define his life in both service and sport. After completing his military duty, he embarked on a 38-year career at Kawneer Company, rising to Chief Pilot of the flight department before retiring. Yet it was in the world of American trapshooting where Hiter left an enduring legacy. Joining the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) in June 1982 at age 42, he began with a Winchester Model 12 Y-gun and quickly registered 500 singles and 400 handicap targets in his first year. Over the next 23 years, he amassed 107,950 singles, 92,675 handicap, and 73,250 doubles targets, earning 94 trophies across state, zone, and Satellite Grand tournaments. His victories included the 1990 Georgia State Doubles Championship and High All-Around, the 1994 Alabama Open High Over All, the 1995 Georgia Budweiser Handicap, and multiple class titles in singles and High Over All events.
Hiter’s dedication deepened upon entering the Veterans category in 2003, where he won 43 category trophies—including Veterans State Singles in 2003 and 2004, Veterans State Doubles from 2003 to 2005, and Southern Grand honors such as the 2004 Veterans Doubles Championship and AA High All-Around. A 16-time member of the Georgia State Trap Team and captain in 1998, 2003, and 2004, he was named to the 2005 Veteran All-American Second Team and earned the 2004 AA-27-AA and Quarter Million target pins. From 1992 until his death, he served as Georgia ATA Delegate. Inducted as the eighteenth Georgian into the Georgia Trapshooting Hall of Fame, John David Hiter of Snellville, GA, passed away at age 72 on July 25, 2010. His memorial service featured Military Honors and an Honorary Escort by the American Trap Association, a fitting tribute to a Marine and a champion whose life embodied duty, precision, and unwavering dedication to the sport he loved.
