An avid hunter and fisherman, Luther began his competitive shooting career shooting trap, unlike many shooters.
Luther’s first major win came at the 1988 Georgia State Shoot, wining the 1988 Georgia State Handicap Champion title in the Handicap Championship.
In 1992, Luther became the Georgia State Doubles Champion with a score of 98/100, defeating GATA 2000 Hall of Fame Inductee Gary Blair’s 97, a score which was three targets higher then the remainder of the field.
Luther became Georgia State Doubles Champion again in 1999, with a score of 96/100. He repeated the feat in 2004, with a score of 95/100, 2 targets ahead of the next competitor, & again in 2008, with a score of 97/100.
Luther’s other Georgia State Shoot wins include the Class “B” Champion in the 1989 Georgia State Singles Championship, the Class “B” Champion in the 1992 Georgia State Doubles Championship, tying 1992 Doubles Champion, and 2004 GATA Hall of Fame Inductee, Mike Wasielewski, with a score of 94/100. Luther’s trophy count continued to rise when he won the 24-25 yard Champion in the 1997 Peach State Handicap Championship, the Class A Champion in the 2005 Georgia State Doubles Class Championship, the 26-27 yard Champion in the 2005 Georgia State Peach State Handicap, 6th Place in the 2007 Georgia State Handicap Championship, and Runner-up in the 2010 Georgia State Doubles Championship.
Luther’s out-of-state achievements include the 1996 Alabama State Singles Championship Open Class “C”, 2006 Alabama State Doubles Championship Open Class “A” Champion, and 2010 Alabama State Doubles Championship Non-resident Class “A” Champion, as well as several other class and open championships in South Carolina and Tennessee..
In addition to his shooting accomplishments, Luther’s contribution to the sport of trapshooting also warrants recognition. Luther was instrumental in the creation of the GATA Hall of Fame Classic Shoot, anonymously contributing his time, his talents, and his money. For several years after the shoot’s inception, Luther provided the meats, vegetables, and equipment so Hall of Fame Classic shooters could enjoy a Low Country Boil. Luther has also contributed his custom made knives as prizes for numerous shoots.
At the completion of the 2012 target year, Luther has shot 36,950 Singles, 30,500 Handicap, and 22,000 Doubles targets, for a total of 100,450 targets.
