Our fifth Enshrinee to the Georgia Trapshooting Hall of Fame could be inducted for his service to the sport as well as shooting merit. Born on October 6, 1920 in New Orleans, Louisiana, at a tender age he moved to Rayle, Georgia. As a young man, he moved to Decatur and with his devoted wife, Mary Alice at his side, started a small tool and die business in their children’s playhouse. A s the business grew , it w as m o ved into the family garage where it remained for a number of years.
Mary Alice delivered the orders to customers, with the children on many occasions, sitting in the back seat. By this time, the family numbered six, a loving mom and dad, two girls and two boys. Today the family has grown to include six grandchildren. Together, Len and Mary Alice worked to build what today is known as the Evans Companies, one of the largest private employers in Rockdale County with more than ninety employees and multi-million dollar sales.
Len began his shooting career as a rifle shooter at the Gate City Gun Club in 1964. Prior to his trapshooting exploits, he was a skeet shooter from 1969 to 1974. Early in 1974, Len was approached by the State ATA Delegate and asked to consider construction of a facility large enough to hold a state and zone shoot. This request led to what is currently the South River Gun Club. The club has been the scene of many charity shoots for the Spina Bifida Association, as well as the Tuberculosis Foundation, with all proceeds having been graciously given to these charities.
Len’s shootin g exploits are alm ost too nu m ero us to list. D uring his ongoin g shooting career he has registered a total of almost 250,000 targets. He is an ATA and NRA life member, having won over 200 shooting trophies in his career, including 33 ATA Trophies, 18 of which were Grand American Awards. He has a long run in registered singles of 463. Len is a multi-year member of the Georgia State Trapshooting Team and has been named to either the Veteran or Senior Veteran All American Team for the last nine years.
Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Trap Shooting Hall of Fame, I present ot you L.L. Evans, Jr.
