Ray began shooting registered trap targets in 1989, shooting only 100 singles targets, adding 200 handicap targets, and 300 doubles targets in 1990 and 1991. Ray disappeared from the registered ranks until 2005 where good things began to happen.
First major win came at the 2005 Grand American where he won the Class D Doubles Class Championship with 97/100.
Two years later, in 2007, Ray won the Florida State Class A Doubles and High All Around trophies.
In 2008, Ray managed to break all 100 singles in the North Carolina State Preliminary Singles Event winning the Class "A" title.
In 2009, Ray won the Alabama State Singles Open Championship with 199/200
In 2010, Ray bested 21 1 others to take the Georgia State Singles Championship with a perfect 200/200, then continued his run winning the High All Around and High Overall Championships as well as Class A Champion in the Doubles Championship and 5th Place in the Handicap Championship.
2010 Continued being a great year for Ray, as he won the South Carolina Singles and Doubles Championships, and numerous trophies at the North Carolina State Shoot.
Ray returned to the 'winners Circle winning the Georgia State Singles Championships in 2012, with 197/200 and 2016 with 198/200.
Ray has won more than sixty trophies at State, Zone, Satellite Grand, and Grand American trapshoots.
To date, Ray has accumulated 58,900 Singles, 49,000 Handicap, and 43700 Doubles Targets, for a total of 151 ,600 registered targets.
