SPARTA, Ill. — Georgia trapshooter Joseph Oleary delivered consistent performances across multiple events at the 2026 Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) US Open Trapshooting Championships, held May 27-31 at the World Shooting & Recreational Complex.
According to official trophy and call sheet reports, O’Leary captured Sub Veteran Category Champion honors in the Graf & Sons Doubles event with a score of 97. He also earned Class A Runner-up in the Kubota Doubles Championship with a 96.
O’Leary attended the competition with his son Evan, who currently resides in Alabama. Evan also posted a notable result, finishing as runner-up in Event 11: SOS Clays Handicap following a shootoff with eventual champion Dagen Voightman of Nebraska and Jake Alsup (FL) and Justin Dewitt (IL) who placed third and fourth, respectively.
These achievements highlight the Oleary family’s strong showing amid a competitive national field. No other specific Georgia trophy winners were detailed in the primary trophy reports reviewed for the event.
The championships unfolded at the expansive World Shooting & Recreational Complex in Randolph County, approximately 45 miles southeast of St. Louis. The 1,600-acre facility, operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, boasts 120 trap houses spread over roughly 3.5 miles, along with sporting clays courses, combination fields, fishing lakes, and ample camping and RV accommodations. This setup offers an ideal blend of world-class shooting infrastructure and family-friendly recreational amenities, making it a premier destination for major ATA events.
Competitors enjoyed favorable late-May weather in southern Illinois, with sunny conditions that provided excellent target visibility and aligned with organizers’ expectations for prime shooting weather at this time of year.
The 21st annual US Open served as both a prestigious national championship and valuable preparation for the larger Grand American World Trapshooting Championships, also hosted at the Sparta complex later in the summer.
